It is with deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Ellen Areaux. Born in Gulfport, Mississippi, she was a trailblazer in many ways. Best known as the owner and operator of Walkers West, a renowned Tennessee Walking Horse breeding and training facility in Kaufman, Texas. She made a lasting impact on the equestrian community all over the globe. She began her equestrian journey riding Saddlebreds at Gulf Park College before falling in love with the Tennessee Walking Horse breed. Under her leadership, Walkers West became a respected name in the industry, known for its dedication to preserving and promoting the breed.

Beyond her equestrian pursuits, Mary Ellen was a Real Estate Broker and a pioneer for women in the commercial real estate industry. In a field historically dominated by men, she not only held her own—she excelled, earning respect and admiration from her peers for her tenacity, intelligence, and professionalism. With a background in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas and business experience with General Growth Properties, Inc., she brought a unique blend of insight and savvy to every endeavor.

While Mary Ellen never had biological children of her own, she was a mother figure to many. The relationships she nurtured were built not on blood, but on love, trust, and her unwavering presence in the lives of those who looked up to her. She poured her heart into the lives of those around her, offering support, guidance, and a generous, nurturing spirit that will never be forgotten.

Mary Ellen was the only daughter of Linea Ellen Rydell and Samuel Park Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: Donald Park Wilson; Dr. William Ewing Wilson of Raleigh, North Carolina; Edward Rydell Wilson of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and Robert Lee Wilson. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Wilson of Pilot Point, Texas, as well as two nieces, a nephew, and extended family who cherished her.

Mary Ellen Areaux’s legacy is one of leadership, excellence, and passion. Her generosity to others was unparalleled. Her influence continues to be felt by all who were fortunate to know her, learn from her, and love her.
