It is with great sadness to announce the sudden passing of Black Gins Scout on Monday, April 7, 2025. Sired by Gen’s Black Gin and out of a Jose’ Jose’ mare, Scout was born on September 29, 2017. He was raised by Willard and Linda Townson of Woodville, Alabama, and was started by Leatherwood Farm.

Scout was shown sparingly as a two-year-old, but quickly made a name for himself his three-year-old year under the direction of Chad Way at Leatherwood Farm winning at Walking For Cancer, Fayetteville Blue Ribbon and the FAST Fall Showcase. As a four-year-old, Scout made five trips to the winner’s circle including winning the Owner-Amateur Four-Year-Old Stallions World Championship with Jayden Jackson. The team also earned the Owner-Amateur Four-Year-Old Reserve World Grand Championship that same year.

In the winter of 2022, Mike and Beth Davis selected Scout as the new mount for their daughter, Meghan Hammond. Meghan and Scout began 2023 with a win at the National Trainers’ Show and went on to find themselves in the winner’s circle at the FAST Spring Showcase, the Spring Fun Show, the Money Tree Classic and the Marshall County Horseman’s Association before being named Owner-Amateur Five-Year-Old Stallions Reserve World Champions at the Celebration. 2024 saw the team in the winner’s circle at the National Trainers’ Show and the Spring Extravaganza before Meghan went on maternity leave. Scout and Meghan were gearing back up for an exciting year in 2025.

Scout was truly a gentle giant and will be greatly missed by The Mike Davis Family as well as the entire EquiKnox Farms training team.
